Filling in the EH registration form prior to Sundays fixtures of 4 x 25 mins games it became clear we had a small issue. Due to some last minute injuries we were going into a very competitive round of 4 cup games with no defenders in the squad! Massive well done to all the players who played out of position today including Holly, Amber, Ailsa, Amelia, Laura and Emily. Perhaps a new defender was found today in Amber who had a solid day at right back, tackling hard and counter attacking with aplomb. With the majority of the squad being u15 we went into the day wanting to do our best but also trying to enjoy the day.

Nevertheless we were confident the girls would try their best and enjoy the crisp Yorkshire morning. A cunning formation inspired by Sammy and the Mens 3s success the day before meant we started with good confidence and shape vs a highly rated Thirsk, who regularly play a number of divisions higher than us. After absorbing plenty of early pressure the girls started to find their feet, with some lovely interlinking passing and good defending when needed.  Ailsa was controlling the game from a new defensive position, picking up tackles and spraying some lovely passes to release our fast breaking mid and forwards. Hannah, Emily, and Amelia worked well in the middle of the pitch and tracked back well. With good wide work from Georgina and Charlotte the girls started to apply pressure back on Thirsk and eventually won a number of short corners. Ailsa stepped up to convert, with 5 minutes remaining Adel were 1-0 up.  More solid work from the whole team saw us register our first points of the day.

The second game was end to end hockey vs Halifax with both teams playing nice passing hockey with strong defences at both ends of the pitch.  Once again time was ticking before super-sub Molly, not-so-fresh from a hard netball tournament earlier on turned on the skills with a solo run in the D and lovely struck finish for another 1-0 lead. A nervous five minutes ensued as a strong Halifax team pressed but we held out for another 3 points in the bag.

Perhaps the early two wins lulled us into a false sense of confidence for our third game against a very strong Harrogate side. A nervous push back didn’t set a good tone and Harrogate took advantage, playing some nice hockey, passing well and taking a 2 goal lead. What’s great about this team is they never give up and they came back strong. Amelia dropped back into centre back and played a solid defensive game in a new position for her. Holly was also making some strong tackles in her first every series of games at left back. Another new defender Amber was tackling well and driving forwards when possible. Laura took a ball to the stomach and battled on as long as she could but eventually had to come off. Emily and Hannah combined well to create some good chances, with Georgina and Charlotte using their pace to attack down the wings.

With the clock ticking down a formation change was made which paid off with Molly breaking forwards and passing near post to a well placed Jamiee who confidently slotted the ball away. Game on! Adel pressed hard with good attacking play but couldn’t equalise and the game finished 1-2

The final game was against Wakefield, a side who we always start off well and fade against. Sadly it was a similiar theme, with the girls battling bravely to eventually go down 0-3. Stella was superb in goals, stopping many shots and rebounds and her clear instructions to the new defenders helped massively. Alice posted up well to create a chance for Adel, but we couldn’t convert and finished the day with a disappointing loss against table topping Wakefield.

Many thanks to all the girls for their energy and commitment, the parents for their support and lastly to Pam for giving up her Sunday morning to umpire. Roll on the next round of games!
