words by Phil Bayford

On a weekend seemingly full of Adel vs Brigg matches across the club, the mens 2nd XI took on theirs. After watching a magnificent performance from the Ladies 2s the boys were inspired and a short warm up was plenty of time to get in gear.

Early goals from Carter and Bayford set the tone as Adel dominated the opening exchanges. A strong press and ever rotating front line ensured their defence was always on the back foot whilst the calmness of Leeming and silky skills of Greer ensured the midfield was well balanced. Madden linked up well with Ratcliffe moving the ball up and down the pitch, whilst Powley was vocal at the back and Stevenson untroubled in net. Further goals were added by Holford and Partner ensuring a comfortable lead was taken into the half time break.

As everyone knows the most important part of any half time tactical discussion is to reiterate the fact that regardless of score line the next team to score will almost certainly win the match. In this instance not only did Adel score straight from the push back it was by far and away one of the best team goals scored this season. Slick passing from back to front and neat 2 touch hockey around the D ended in an easy finish for the captain. Buller who had been relatively quite and ineffective throughout the game showed up with a peach of a reverse stick shot – reminiscent of Hull Uni away 2 years ago… to get his goal for the day. Brigg didn’t offer much throughout the game with a straight strike short being the only threat and unfortunately ruining a perfect day. Final score 6-1.

MOTM – Holford for general running and dogged enthusiasm as well as his 2 goals.

DOTD – Bayford poor finishing on show in the 2nd half
