Adel Men’s 1’s had two games over the weekend with Sheffield Hallam 3’s first up on the Saturday and a highly awaited clash with Bradford HC the only other unbeaten side in the league on the Sunday.
Saturday saw the arrival of a strong Hallam team with Adel giving a very warm welcome to their new goal keeper Matt Cooper by sending him into the Hallam dressing room after Jimmy assumed he was part of the opposition team.
Hallam set the tone of the game early on with strong possession at the back but struggled to get the ball forward thanks to fantastic work rate in the middle of the field from Hemming, Bally & Mayhew who limited forward ball for the away team. Despite the Hallam possession Adel dominated the first half with several devastating counter attacks leading to goals from Moorhouse, Bally & Purdy to end the half 3-0 to Adel. A strong half time team talk from Big Ben spurred Adel on in the second half resulting in Adel quickly adding 2 more goals to the tally with both Moorhouse & Bally picking up their second goals of the game. Goals from Harris & Bayford killed off the game and ensured that Adel moved past 100 goals scored so far for the season. Final score 7-0 a great start to the weekend!
MOM- Simon Ball- Loads of running and 2 goals.
DOD- Will Purdy- Yellow Card
After an unusually quite and booze free night on Saturday (Moorhouse still under investigation) Adel welcomed Bradford to the fortress for what would be an epic encounter. With a few sore legs from Saturdays game the welcome sight of ‘Birthday Boy’ Kieran Savage & ‘Dad of the year’ Paul Watkins was a real boost for the Adel men who knew they would be in for a tough battle against a much younger Bradford side.
As the crowds gathered at the side of the pitch it was a nervous start to the game with both teams eagerly not wanting to make an early mistake. Both teams pressed high up the pitch which forced both teams into some impressive play across the back line. With the nervous start to the game and emotions running high it was only a matter of time before the first card of the game would be shown, Purdy with what can only be described as a shocking challenge saw him have the first sit down of the game after being shown ‘Yellow’. This was quickly followed by a very harsh green card for Chris Green who was alleged to have ‘put a shoulder’ into the Bradford forward. Adel kept calm however and with some fantastic defensive play from the back line the score was kept at 0-0 at half time.
The second half saw the opening goal of the game for Adel with Sam Harris firing home to give the home team a 1-0 lead. This was quickly followed by a green card for skipper Hemming who clearly had a strong word with himself on the side-line as he darted back on the pitch to get on the end of the assist of the season from Andy ‘Kevin De Bruyne’ Bird to double the Adel lead! Bradford then piled on the pressure and picked up a goal from a clever short corner routine to bring the score back to 2-1, GAME ON ! Adel quickly increased the pace again with some impressive play down the right-hand side of the pitch which ended in a fantastic finish by Simon Ball only to be disallowed by the umpire at the other end of the field in one of the biggest controversies since Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal in the 2010 World Cup. Regardless Adel accepted the decision and got back on task to hold onto the 2-1 lead.
Adel 1’s are now 6 points clear at the top of the table as we move into the final 5 games of the season.
MOM- Andy Birdy- Solid at the back!
DOD- Will Purdy- 3 Cards over the weekend not quite the hat trick that he was looking for!
A huge thank you to the umpires and supporters over the weekend.
