Adel Men’s 1’s returned after an extended Christmas break with a tricky away trip to the delightful seaside town of Grimsby. The trip was made harder by 2 late drop outs so the team travelled with 11 with coach Ben Hendley ready to step in if called upon.

With the depleted numbers coach Ben thought it as a perfect opportunity to test his new ‘3 at the back’ formation. Adel started the game strongly, pinning Grimsby in their own half. The 1st goal came when Jimmy ‘Christmas bod’ Mayhew found Sam Harris at the top of the D, Harris scuffed his shot and quickly cursed himself only for the keeper to let it trickle in at the far post, 1-0.

Adel then withstood a bout of Grimsby pressure. It was 2-0 just before half time though with the same combo of a Mayhew assist and Harris finish. This one despatched far more convincingly.

Adel started the 2nd half strongly again and it wasn’t long before it was 3-0. Will Purdy with some neat skill to get himself free in the D and rifling home a shot leaving the keeper with no chance. 3-0 soon became 4-0 after some skilful wing play from Jamesy set up Purdy for his second, deflecting it past the keeper at the far post.  Adel piled forward again and made it 5-0 with a well worked short corner eventually being tapped in by Simon Ball.

Moving into the final stages of the match Adel legs began to tire and their 2nd clean sheet of the season looked increasingly doubtful, Andy Bird clearing off the line with his ‘stick’ and keeper Josh Berry being called into action a number of times. Eventually after some sloppy play in the middle of the park Grimsby got their goal…….and then another. Final Whistle 5-2.

It should also be noted that in the mist of all the second half goals Harris managed to avoid a hat-trick by missing a tricky 2-yard, open goal tap in, earning himself DOD, and Jamesy flicked one over the bar from ½ a yard out. MOM defender Gaz Maver for his defensive prowess.

Special mention to Grimsby’s after game tea’s. Homemade Shepard’s pie and Yorkshire puds. Respect.

The winning streak continues. Next up a home game against Kingston upon Hull. Thanks to the umpires and the Ultras who support us home and away.
