week 1, no hot water in the showers…
week 2, pizza wars and changing room cock ups….
Just as well we seem to be organised on the pitch with almost a full set of fixtures in week 2 including some league games.
Ladies 1s got off to a flying start with a 4-0 victory over Halifax 1s. A comprehensive victory with new players integrating well, the promoted youth from the juniors providing added speed and the pre-season fitness sessions showing early signs of paying off under the watchful eye of Jenny Gwynne from the sidelines. Perhaps happiest of all will be Katie Love with victory over her former team!
Ladies 2s also took on Halifax but ventured along the M62 for an away game. A 5-1 victory for Adel confirming the strength in depth in the ladies section as the 2s aim for promotion for the second year running.
Ladies 3s were also victors in their friendly fixture against the Ladies 4s but the 2-1 scoreline showed that the 4s are up for a challenge once again after last years romp to the title.
In the mens section the 1s had another week off, resting up ahead of their opening league game next week against Sheff Hallam 4s. The mens 2s took on local rivals Ben Rhydding 3s and with some new faces, supplemented by some wise old heads they ran out 4-1 victors in a competitive game played in good spirit. Good to see one of the wise old heads bagging a hat-trick…..
The mens 3s had the toughest fixture of the day at home to a strong Rotherham 2s and the 6-0 loss was perhaps not a fair reflection on the effort put in by the 3s but hopefully the team will settle down and improve as the season progresses.
The mens 4s put in the performance of the day with a 6-2 away win at Thirsk, and all with only 10 men. And finally the mens 5s romped to a 5-0 victory over our neighbours from Leeds to sort out the early season bragging rights in LS16.
A full set of fixtures this coming weekend but ahead of then there are a few things you can all think about to help with the smooth running of the club.
Training – we have a committed group of coaches who give up their time on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help improve our teams on the playing side of things. Please try and make it easier for your team and skipper at the weekend by attending training and getting to know each other better and how you will play as a team.
Subscription Secretary – unfortunately Josie has decided to move to pastures new and we wish her well but this means the important role of subscription secretary is vacant and its now more than ever that we need this role filling – please contact me or Laura Summers if you are able to take this on.
Tea organiser – it cannot have escaped your attention that we are bumbling through week by week with each team fending for themselves in providing opposition teas. We have a couple of alternative options on the table but we need someone to take hold of this and make sure it happens every week like clockwork. Please let me or one of the Committee know if you can pick up this duty and help make sure we come across as a sociable and organised club to the rest of the Yorkshire hockey community.
Junior training – as a club we recognise the effort people like Pam and Simon Sutton put in to make our junior training and coaching a success for the long term future of the club. Last weekend we had three juniors in the ladies 1s and several more in our other senior teams. We also have several former juniors now playing and leading our senior teams. But this does not happen by magic – we need volunteers to pop along to GSAL on a Friday night and pass on their experience and skills to help keep the pipeline of talent coming through. Please liaise with your captains over when you can lend a hand to help bring on the next generation of Adel players.
And finally…. I hope everyone made it home from the Cops and Robbers Otley Run. Judging by the state of one person I saw on Sunday I am assuming a good time was had by all! Thanks to Phil and Gaby for organising although how hard can it be to organise a pub crawl?!
