After national recognition at the weekend for the ladies section at the England Hockey awards evening in Reading, the eagle eyed among you will have noticed that there is a congratulatory message on the Yorkshire Hockey Association website.
If you did spot this (http://www.yorkshireha.org.uk/news.php ) then you might also have spotted that it makes reference to a further award which seems to have escaped everyone’s attention. At the end of season Yorkshire Hockey dinner in May, trophies for league and cup winners (including our Ladies 3s of course), and top scorers in each division are handed out.
Sadly, it seems as though there was no representation from Leeds Adel HC at the YHA dinner a few weeks ago, otherwise they would have been able to collect the award for Mens Most Improved Club of the Year from Yorkshire Hockey. This award is decided for by the YHA Committee based on a number of factors as opposed to results on the pitch. It’s recognition of the warm welcome we give to opponents and officials, the development and progression of the club and the hospitality offered after the game (which I presume cannot stretch to the quality of our infamous teas!).
This is very much a whole team effort across the mens section so congratulations to Paul Lewis, all the mens team skippers and everyone who has gone out of their way to ensure everyone enjoys their hockey playing experience at Adel on and off the pitch. It is also due to the much improved facilities we now enjoy with the new pitch and changing room upgrades so we should not overlook the excellent work from Greg Hilton and the support of AWMA in providing the foundations for this success.
This completes an impressive hat-trick of awards this season with national recognition from England Hockey, county recognition from Yorkshire and city recognition from the Leeds Sports Awards with Pam Hardaker recognised as the Participation Coach of the Year back in March. With 2 league titles to also celebrate, I am confident this represents our most successful season as a club and we therefore plan to arrange a celebratory evening before the start of next season so these awards can be properly recognised and the success shared with everyone who might not have been able to be in attendance when they were first handed out.
