Leeds Adel u16 Girls 2015-16

This season has been one of ups and downs for our u16 girls’ side. The greatest achievement for this talented squad was to qualify for the play off final weekend, especially after setbacks earlier in the season including fighting back for promotion from the second tier of competition.

However, the play offs are always a tough proving ground, and with the bare eleven on an unseasonably warm morning in Halifax, the odds were always stacked against the Adel team. Furthermore, a number of the players had spent the week beforehand playing in the school national finals, so fatigue was always likely to play a part on the day.

Adel made a strong start against Sheffield, taking the lead. Sophie Lancaster was unlucky not to extend the advantage when a penalty corner rebounded off the foot of the post. However, the team were pegged back in the closing stages by a rocket of a penalty corner. Final score 1-1.

After a game rest, Adel had to face two fixtures, back-to-back. First up was York, and an even game that either side could have won. However a late sucker punch saw the Minster side take the victory, 1-0.

Immediately after that game, Adel faced their toughest assignment against a strong Ben Rhydding side. A battling performance from the side in orange saw them hold out for a long time, and some heroics from Nicole Smith in goal kept Rhydding at bay for a long time. However, the fatigue of Adel and the quality of the opposition told as they scored three goals in the final ten minutes for a resounding victory.

Although we only left the playoffs with a single point, there was no lack of industry from the team, and the management duo of Shields and Lewis were pleased with the girls’ efforts. The hope is now that a number of these girls have a taste for senior competition and become active members of the Ladies senior section joining some of their peers across the teams.

Thanks to all the players, supporters and officials who have made this season possib
