Harrogate 2 : 2 Adel
After a run of disappointing results, Adel Men’s 1st XI turned up with nearly a full complement of players and produced a performance to be proud of, even if they didn’t manage to take all three points.
In the early morning mist versus a weakened opposition, Adel may have hoped to catch hosts Harrogate 2s cold, and a strong start from the War Memorial side showed their intent. A sharp penalty corner routine led to Kastelik striking a foot on the line, and converting the resultant penalty flick after just five minutes of the match.
As expected from a strong side like Harrogate, they began to push back and sought to gain some attacking momentum of their own. Ill-discipline when defending 23m hits saw Adel concede penalty corners, and one of these was converted from a strong strike, beating Lewis and Taylor at the right post to level.
There was still time for Adel to regain initiative before half time. Harrogate worked and pressed the visitors hard, but simple hockey was proving effective for Adel. After a transfer round the back and a good lead run from Mayhew, Lewis played the ball forward to Hendley. With time in midfield, the playmaker found Portnell rushing forward towards the Harrogate circle. His first shot was saved, but showing good circle attitude saw him score the rebound, giving Adel a 2-1 advantage at half time.
The second half belonged to Adel who did all but score. Effective pressing and strong defensive work across the team saw the men in black dominate possession and territory. However, clear-cut chances were at a premium. Harrogate maintained a counter-attack threat and made Adel pay with a second penalty corner to level the scores. Despite playing ten minutes of the second half with ten men, Adel performed well and everyone played their part in a strong team showing.
Next week Adel will hope to have another strong performance against league leaders Grimsby, who have won all but one fixture this season.
