Leeds Adel Men’s 1st team took to the field for the first time ahead of the 2015-16 season in a friendly against local side Ben Rhydding who will play in the league above them this year.
Ben Rhydding had brought a youthful but talented side who provided the opportunity for Adel’s 1s to stretch their legs ahead of the league opener in two weeks time.
Adel had a fresh look themselves, with no fewer than 4 players who have joined through big money transfers in the summer period. It was one of those signings who broke the deadlock, Tasker who scrambled home a penalty corner after Purdy’s initial strike was saved.
Shortly after Adel doubled their lead through another new signing, Bird who was found in the middle of the D by Walker following some good team play down the middle. Walker then got one of his own deflecting past the Ben Rhydding ‘keeper following a pinpoint delivery from Tasker.
The familiar faces of Hill, Hendley and the returning Robinson were composed on the ball and nullified the BR attack well, but when they did break through the young Taylor was determined in the Adel goal.
Shortly before the break, it was Bird who added his second completing a quick counter attack with a short range finish.
At HT the principles were reiterated, and Adel were told to consolidate their lead for time on the ball.
The second half started in similar fashion where Adel took control of possession, and forced BR to watch the home side passing the ball around confidently. Hendley finished a PC at the second opportunity, following a decent save by the Rhydding ‘keeper.
The goal of the match followed where Ellison took a free hit on the right hand side, played the ball to Walker who laid it off to the overlapping Bishop. Bishop took the ball into the D where he found Bird. Bird’s “wide” shot was then tipped in by Bayford. Poetry in motion.
Adel’s scoring was rounded off by Walker in almost identical fashion to his first, the ball being fired in by Tasker only to be deflected past the helpless ‘keeper.
It was a solid 60 minute performance that was sadly let down by the remaining 10 minutes where pre season fitness showed and Rhydding managed to find the backboard 3 times due to relaxed marking. However it didn’t tarnish the good benchmark set by the Men in Black.
On to next week where Adel Men’s 1s will head down the M1 to take on Wakefield in a friendly, before a league opener at home on the 26th September.
