The Men’s 2s kicked off their campaign a week later than most teams and the first test was an away trip to Doncaster 3s – a team who had been relegated from the division above last year. After a nightmare week of trying to scratch a team together, it was just a relief to get on the pitch, starting with 10 men and being joined by Sam and Andy after other commitments.
A slow start against a strong side, including a number of ex-national league players, an England U18 and a new player from Germany, saw us quickly 3-0 before we had managed to find our feet – all three of which were extremely well struck reverse stick strikes.
After this shock, we settled down, found a shape and started to string our passing game together. A tactical switch to move Ash to sweeper and Si Taylor to right back helped, and Andy Boag’s tireless running up front eventually gave us a clear chance which he slotted home nicely for a goal on debut.
Further battling for the rest of the half, with Finn Lees and Eddy Fuller finding their feet in the wide positions, saw us go into the break 3-1 down. At which point Sam appeared, with no sign of Andy still….
Not sure what happened, but Sam’s introduction at half time saw them score another three quick goals after half time – some sloppy passing and giving the ball away with everyone at fault, although Rob Darling in goal pulled off one outstanding save at full stretch with his foot in this period.
Again, we settled down, but then tiredness started to tell, especially in midfield as we simply ran out of legs and we shipped another three goals late on, however there was still time for Andy to finally appear with less than 1minute on the watch and get a whole 15s on the pitch.
A 9-1 defeat, but at least a few positives to take forward. If this is the Doncaster team they put out every week, they’ll be walking this league.
MOTM: Andy Boag for a goal on debut, DOTD: Andy P for a 15s appearance.
