From time to time, former players bump into each other at the funeral of an ex-player and on every occasion there is the suggestion that we should do something to arrange an ex-players reunion in happier circumstances.
Therefore, I am pleased to say that the first Leeds Adel HC Old Boys (and Girls) Reunion has been arranged as follows:
- Date – Saturday 7th March 2020
- Venue – Adel War Memorial Association
- The Plan – 1.30pm – Men’s 1s take on Whitley Bay/Tynemouth in their last home game of the season (potential promotion game to North Div 1)
3.00pm – Men’s 3rd team featuring legends such as Greg Hilton and Simon Taylor do battle with Acomb 1s
4.30pm – Watch some of our most senior players including international masters Dave “Madge” Margerison and Ian “Sniffer” Phillips take on Acomb 2s.
6.00pm – retire to the bar (if not already done so as there is the added distraction of England v Wales in the 6 Nations from 4.45pm!) for refreshments and a trip down memory lane remembering the good old days of grass hockey in the Adel green and gold.
Invites have been sent out to former players where we have an email address but clearly there are lots more who we don’t have any details for now. I am pleased to say that over 25 people have already replied to say they think this is a great idea and plan on attending. For those who have not yet replied please drop me and email or text to say if you can join us and feel free to pass on the email to other former players you may still be in touch with.
Sadly a couple of former players are unable to make it due to holidaying in Madeira (George Buxton) and Zurich (Tony Pickard) – clearly retiring from hockey allows you to enjoy the finer things in life!
At this stage, most attendees are likely to be in the bar from 4.30 onwards so if you don’t fancy watching any of the games then we look forward to seeing you in the clubhouse. Partners are more than welcome to join us too – at this stage we have only managed to invite past players from the men’s section but if there are past ladies players who would like to attend then please feel free to extend the invitation.
Please be assured there is no intention to rattle collection tins, persuade you to re-join or make anonymous donations in your will – the event is purely intended to be a social gathering. Hope to see as many of you as possible on the 7th March.
Mark Powley – Chairman – Leeds Adel HC.
Ian Phillips – President – Leeds Adel HC
Nick Hockin – unofficially appointed Secretary of Leeds Adel HC Old Boys
