Ladies 1’s vs Halifax Saturday 20th September 2:30pm push back

Adel 3 Halifax 1

The ladies 1’s season kicked off to a good start with a win away at Halifax. After 2 tasty encounters with them last season and watching them win 2-0 against City of York last weekend in the North Challenger Cup, the 1’s were in no doubt that this was a tough way to start the season.

After a good warm up and passive aggressive team talk from Sam Ransley (ladies coach) the match began. Halifax had won the toss and decided to start with push back. Adel’s forwards pressed really well within the first 5 mins and were putting Halifax under real pressure. Helen Goacher putting some great through balls in to the Halifax 25…Clare Hesslewood and Clare Goacher  making some great runs, but were unable to find the net.

Halifax broke quickly, with some clever play from their hit out. They hit a good ball into the Adel D and was neatly deflected into the top corner, despite Adel keeper Sarah McCall’s lunge.

Adel responded quickly after Halifax scored, a good passage of attacking play resulted in an Adel short corner. Clare Hesslewood producing a good first strike onto the near side post, with Clare Goacher deflecting it past the keepers pad. 1-1.

From this point Adel really started to settle, the distribution of the ball by the defence was great, hit outs were taken really quickly. Central defenders Claire Byers and Rachel Barson were pivotal in the distribution around the back. Wing backs Josie Warburton and Catherine Henry always managed to put a really strong early ball up the line to the forwards.

Adel didn’t have to wait long to take the lead. Another great press by the Adel forwards allowed Helen Goacher to Intercept the ball on the half way line, she drove hard towards the 25 and Clare Goacher made a great run into the D. Helen’s well judged pass found Clare and she shot. The Halifax keeper made a decent save, but couldn’t clear the ball past Clare Hesslewood, she showed good composure to slap the ball hard, it took a slight deflection off a Halifax foot and looped top right hand corner.

There was a big cheer from the Adel bench. It was a big relief to be back in the lead. The next 10-15 minutes was end to end stuff. Halifax were desperate to get back on the score board. Adel defended repeat short corners on more than one occasion. Rachel Barson showing some real defending class.

The second half started as fast as the first. Both teams were counter attacking well, Adel’s press continued to stop Halifax from making big in roads from their 16’s. Tina Parson and Katy Blyth continued to worry the Halifax defence, both making cracking runs in to space and holding up the ball to allow the Adel midfield to catch up! Jenny Wright and Josie Warburton made great use of the space they had on the left hand side of the pitch, quick thinking from Rachel Barson and Claire Byers saw them receiving quick ball from the Adel 16’s. Jenny’s league famous roll out coming handy to beat her marker and allow Anna Blyth to move the point of attack to the right. Jaclyn Smith and Laura Fox had a strong game on the right of mid field, they made some great yards and threaded through some probing balls in to the D. Tina Parson was unlucky on a few occasions not to score. During the last 15 minutes of the game Adel started to get a stronger grip on possession and were really playing well. Finally all the hard work paid off. Another quick 16 allowed for quick play through the mid field and up to the forwards, where a short corner was given. A Halifax player was given a yellow card for dissent. Clare Hesslewood hit the ball from the top straight into the gap that the sin binned player had left. 3-1 Adel.

It was a great game to start the season, Rachel Barson was a well deserved winner of Player of the match. Jaclyn Smith was equally as deserving as dick of the day…standard.

Roll on next week!
