As the first games are upon us this coming weekend – we would both like to take this time to introduce ourselves. We are Tom Beale and Gabrielle Nusenbaum, the men’s and ladies club captains for this season.

As our Chairman Mark states, we’ve not just enjoyed success on the pitch, but many other positive changes away from it – and that’s why we’re both so pleased to have been undertaken these roles. Many of the changes come from the members at the club, and we’re always here to take on board any ideas, thoughts, as well as anyone looking to get involved at Adel. Please take any opportunities to make it up to Adel on a Saturday (support juniors on a Friday night, or Sunday afternoon), get to know new players, help support, and make it to the bar on the way out of the car park!

A bit about us:

Tom Beale

I joined Adel in 2015, new to Leeds and new to Hockey and haven’t looked back since. I joined originally in the 4th team and progressed into the 3’s, sporadically appearing for the 2s over the last 2 seasons before taking Sam Jackson’s starting spot as a season highlight last year cheers Holford! Adel has become more than just a hockey club to me and I am incredibly proud to be a member of such a great club. I was going to say it has become a 2nd home but I think I spend far more time at AWMA than my house. Entering my 4th season it has been incredible to see the growth of the club on and off the pitch with successful mixed tours to Wakey and Blackpool a real look-forward to event in the calendar. I have loved watching the growing number of supporters staying to watch games from across the sections last season and know from playing how much it is appreciated and what a difference it can make to a sides performance to have a few Adel fans on the side line.

Thanks to some great new arrivals over the summer, the improvement of Adel members young and old, and a fantastic influx of juniors (courtesy of Pam, Simon, Greg, Bingham and the rest of the junior coaches) I am looking forward to watching (and hopefully playing…) some great hockey, achieving more promotions and enjoying some memorable and regrettable nights in the club house celebrating more Adel success.

Gabrielle Nusenbaum

I came to Adel in 2012 after a long break away from hockey, and got involved in my first season as social secretary (I apologise for some of the regrettable decisions some of you have made over this time) , and also organised the end of season dinner every year up until this year. I’ve also been umpire co-ordinator, as well as ladies 3 captain. As well as ladies captain this year, I’m currently fixture secretary (which I’m in my third year), a member on the exec committee, an AWMA rep, as well as a division rep for Yorkshire hockey. Ive worked my way from ladies 4s when I first joined, up to currently playing with ladies 2s. I’m also proud to say that I’m a member of Adel Hockey Club, and I’m proud to see how friendly we are as a club. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed making new friendships at Adel, and also look forward to welcoming new people who decide to join every year. Like Tom, AWMA has become a second home to me – and it’s been a pleasure seeing how interlinked many of the members have become through coming and supporting teams up at the pitch. It’s like a large family.

There are so many other people in the background who have helped make this club run (Mark P, Pam H, Bridget P, Rich P, Ian P, Ben H, Jim C), to many newer faces this season (Phil B, Rob H, Simon B to name a few) who give their time selflessly. Please be mindful that it’s sometimes the ones we don’t always see that give the most time, and that’s one thing I personally am grateful for. When I’m not involved in hockey (which is rare!), I manage a property portfolio, and enjoy spending time with my husband and our Labrador Taco.

As club captains, as well as making sure we’re competitive, we hope all members enjoy the season ahead. The main part is that we hope you all enjoy your hockey, and lets hope the future is orange! #atid
