A new look Mens 2nd XI took to the field under a blazing hot sun, eager to start the season off well whilst the skipper was off sunning himself in the Dales.
With some new and old faces the pre-match talk was all about doing the basics well against what was sure to be a strong and disciplined Rhydding side.
Some good passing around the older heads at the back, with Sam R, Mark, Greg and Tim combining well and then the speed and skills of Rory and the nouse of Rich P taking the ball forwards for the pace of Giles, and James to take the ball onwards where the skills of Miles and Andy combined to put pressure on the Rhydding defence.
Continued work led to a Penalty Stroke being awarded with Ransley running the length of the pitch, screaming Shotgun before it was awarded to step up and slot home for a 1-nil lead.
The hard team work carried on and led to a second goal, with Adel going into the break 2-0
The hot weather and effort was starting to take it’s toll in the second half, and a number of green cards were given, meaning quick changes were necessary for the team to adapt. Sam J and Tom slotted into the side well and Adel soaked up pressure whilst counter attacking well with crisp, short ball hockey being well received by the hoards of spectators.
As expected the youth of Rhydding made inroads and managed to pull a goal back with a fast break leading to a desperate dive from Gabbot who managed to roll the goal but not before the ball had crossed the line.
Adel reverted back to basics, and some nice short ball work led to openings, and eventually 2 further goals, ending the game 4-1 winners in a very enjoyable afternoons hockey.
Many thanks to the supporters, opposition and umpires for a good flowing game of hockey played hard but in good spirit.
