Boston Spa 1’s 0 – Leeds Adel 2’s first choice XI 5

Venue: Pallekele, Nr. Ben Rhydding, Nr. the Beach

On the new pitch!

Words by R Partner.

The Men’s 2 set off for an away fixture to nearby rivals Boston Spa, home to the British library for those who studies before google!  Rumors that they had a new pitch were soon dispelled when Boston Spa turned out not to be Ben Rhydding in some eyes.  Instead an inch of moss lay on the cricket nets area and a layer of sand deep enough for all of Shams kids to build a variety of castles on the hockey pitch #Mend-Quick-Sham.

After a delayed start waiting for BS players to arrive from a previous fixture the game got underway.  The pitch was slowing down the usual speed of the Men’s 2’s, none more so than young Madden who after watching the rugby union last week was still in 15 aside speed mode. The Adel squad marshalled by young Powley got a hold of the game and finally scored when inform Buller netted shortly followed by 2’s debutant Aldred who V-dragged around the GK to walk the ball into the net. 2-0 at half time.

More of the same pressure second half as BS recruited more late arrivals and Adel continued to miss chances. None more so that Aldred who after turning on the skill setting to round the keeper earlier this time attempted a Dilshan scoop; unsuccessfully! but successfully netting enough votes for DOD. A well worked move saw joint MOM Greer slot in from the back post for his second of the season. Not to be out done Stevenson kept his clean sheet intact with a string of interventions and out of the D stick saves.  A Joint MOM with Greer rightfully decided by #RPS in true support of umpires and refs who give up their time to officiate, #FA-have-a-word-with-yourselves.

There was still time to increase the goal difference, which after a shock Leeds 4’s loss, is now a tidy ‘extra point’ that sees the Men’s 2’s top league 1 after this weekend’s fixtures.  Hinds against one of his old clubs finished off a neat passing move between Partner and Boag (yes that is correct!) for 4-0. Finally Partner cue-ended a goal mouth scramble to keep the pick tape luck going, 5-0 not a bad return for a trip to the Sir Lankan coastal town in LS29.

Next week sees Brigg make the long journey to Adel
