Our annual awards are usually presented at the End of Season Dinner in May each year, where we celebrate success and award winners then wake up the next day and discover they have lost their deserved trophy.  Sadly lockdown 1 put paid to the dinner, and plans to hold a September Start of Season dinner instead were also scuppered.

Therefore, following on from the Oscars, BAFTAs and various other awards evenings of 2020, we have decided to announce the 2019-20 season winners on line and hopefully this will link through from the website to Facebook, twitter and instagram so the deserving winners names can reach a wide audience and the credit they deserve.

To keep engaged with everyone we have split the awards into three sections, ladies playing awards, mens playing awards, and the overall club awards for wider contribution on and off the pitch.

This week, its ladies first.  Last season the ladies ran 5 teams across the North and Yorkshire leagues although sadly the early end to the season saw some teams not quite play all their games.

Starting with the awards that take into consideration all of the ladies section, we then move on to each individual team’s award to their player of the season.

LADIES GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR – FFION SCOTT

Ffion’s hard work, willingness to always step in, as well as continued commitment to training and games saw her move up from the ladies 5s  to ladies 2s.  She then went the extra mile and gave up other Saturday plans at the last minute to travel north to help out the ladies 1s against Whitley Bay and making a vital contribution to a thoroughly deserved away win.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER – SACHA GHINOIS

Sacha is a prime example of a member who has continually improved in her short time at Adel.  She has made her way up to playing for the ladies 3s, and this season has regularly trained with ladies 2s.  She gives tremendous commitment, along with a great attitude at the club and being flexible within teams.

LADIES TEAM OF THE SEASON – LADIES 1st TEAM

Things weren’t looking too good for the squad after a disappointing finish the year before, narrowly missing relegation and a vacancy in the coaching role.  With the hire of Lucy Horsfield as coach and new skipper Sophie Powley, the team had a massive revival, benefitting from the return of former juniors after their Uni years away and the promotion of some talented juniors.  After a frustrating start, the team rallied, and pulled together to finish 3rd – the highest placed Adel team in the ladies section.

TOP GOALSCORER OF THE YEAR – MEGAN CURTISS

For the second year in a row, Megan finished the season as top goal scorer for the ladies section, with an array of goals from short corners, top of the D strikes and a fair few poaching on the far post!

Now to the respective awards for each of the ladies teams player of the season

LADIES 1 – MILLIE JEAVONS

It’s been fantastic to have Millie back at Adel after returning from Birmingham University.  When she left us a few years ago, we knew there was a talented player going away to further improve and we were therefore delighted to welcome her back to Adel and see the progress she has made. Week in week out, winning player of the match for her calm performances at centre back, skilful play and an added bonus with her regular goal scoring short corner routine. A great person to have around, both on and off the pitch.

 LADIES 2 – BECKY HILL

A player with tremendous work rate on the pitch, and a thoroughly committed member of the club at training, matches (and in the bar). Tireless running (if she has remembered to take her inhaler) and always providing a goal threat, its amazing how she finds time to fit hockey in around her successful singing career (Ed: I think thats a different Becky Hill)

LADIES 3 – SARINA JASSAL

Another player who always gives 100% at matches and at training, never without a smile on her face and someone who has been prepared to step up to the 2s where she has not looked out of place.

 LADIES 4 – LAUREN CHESTER

Lauren is someone who is always in the right place at the right time, winning every ball that came her way. Happy to play any position that was needed to benefit the team dynamic. A solid player of the squad!

 LADIES 5 – ABBY PILBEAM

Abby is the perfect team mate, with great spirit and keeps everyone really upbeat, but on top of that, a fantastic player and you know she’s got your back.  You really notice when she’s not on the pitch as she leaves a big hole, although she can be relied on to cheer the team on from the sideline when out with injury.

LADIES YOUTH PLAYER – AMELIA SMITH

A hockey player and avid golfer, Amelia has been at the club for a few years now.  It has been great to see Amelia step up into the ladies 3s to become a core member of their squad, as well as grow in confidence as she transitioned from junior to senior hockey.

Hopefully we will be able to get your awards presented to you at some stage before the end of this season!  Next week its the men’s turn…..
