I’m pleased to be able to share with you the fantastic news that Alice Bowler has been shortlisted in the “Unsung Hero” category for the England Hockey Awards 2024.
Alice for years has been a stalwart of the leadership team at Leeds Adel HC. Over this period she has taken on multiple roles but over the last 3 years has focused much of her efforts on driving the growth of our junior section – particularly the youngest children in our Under 10s.
By consistent and committed work she has increased numbers, enjoyment and results in competition. Our junior section went from a handful of children at this age to a section at capacity – with a long waiting list of people wanting to join. Although we’re adding provision next season to help with this demand this might not be enough! Children are always wanting to bring along their friends!
She is currently in the process of organising the regions first U8s tournament, which takes place this Sunday (21st April) at Adel. She’s inspired 14 other clubs in the area to attend, and celebrate children taking their very first steps into hockey. Her work in helping the transition between our Hockey Heroes programme and the transition to U12 has led to remarkable player retention. Children as young as 5 have been decked in the orange colours of Adel gracing the local Under 10 Yorkshire Youth Hockey Leagues – being confident enough to do so due to Alice’s influence.
Alice has inspired players, parents and older junior members to take up coaching, management, fundraising and more. Many parents, particularly mums who played hockey prior to having children, have been inspired to start playing again because of her. I was personally inspired to take up coaching the Under 12 boys because of her work.
It’s clear to see the pride and joy she takes in volunteering – one recent example being her pleasure in seeing older siblings of our U10 players independently helping them warm up at tournaments. This altruism is built into our juniors because of Alice.
She has a great focus on fun, but with that healthy competitive edge where the kids just thrive!
Alice has developed a supportive culture through regular match reports posted on Spond for each of the five U10 teams, bringing in alternative names for teams to give them each their own identity – focusing on celebrating this rather than “1st team” etc. as she encourages them into the sport.
Alice is a great hockey ambassador, and although she’s been integral for years already she’s still in her mid-20s. I’m hopeful this is just the start of her offering to our sport and Adel. She does this all whilst also playing for our Ladies 1st Team and also managing our social media platforms; showcasing the love of hockey Adel has to the world.
Alice is very much capable in the role of a visible leader but spends most of the time coordinating, inspiring, and mobilising behind the scenes in an understated way. Relentless, organised and always having a smile on her face – any club is very lucky to have an Alice. We are extraordinarily grateful to have her as part of our club.
Sam Jackson – Chair – Leeds Adel Hockey Club
