Thank you to the 25 or so members who attended the AGM on Wednesday evening which made us quorate and able to make decisions for the year ahead. Even more thanks if you attended and “willingly” agreed to pick up one of the vacant positions to help the smooth running of the club!
Official minutes will be produced and shared by the Secretary (Rosh) but a brief summary is provided below of the key issues discussed and agreed.
The Chairman gave a summary of the past year with the highlights being the on pitch success in both mens and ladies sections, the continued success of the junior section including their integration into the senior teams, the strong coaching structure, club spirit, new goals and the increased profile of Leeds Adel HC. Areas of concern that need to be reviewed and addressed are the pitch safety and security after some unsavoury incidents in the last year, the departure of 2 L2 coaches (Sam and Ash who we wish well and thank for their sterling efforts over the last few seasons), managing our growth if we increase the number of senior teams on a Saturday and gaining more help and involvement in the running of the club. There are some discussions regarding kitchen and changing room improvements with AWMA and these are ongoing. But pitch security and safety is the prime concern but costs are prohibitive at the moment so it is up to everyone to be vigilant and look out for each other.
The Treasurer gave an update on the clubs financials which were reasonably healthy thanks to summer league fees, increased membership and match fees coming through promptly. A few skippers still have some match fees to pass across and this needs to be done asap. Subs and match fees for next season can be maintained at current levels. New nets may be acquired for the old goals that are still fit for purpose.
The Mens Captain gave a summary of the season with the highlights being the Mens 1s and 4s winning their leagues. The 2s and 5s had also improved from last season with the 3s finishing in the same spot as the previous year. Coaching and training have gone well with huge thanks to Ben who has achieved the goal of promotion in his first season as coach. Plenty of juniors coming through into the senior teams with scope to look at a 6th team next season, depending on league agreement based on other teams numbers.
The Ladies Captain summarised the season which had finished with minor disappointment for the 2s and 4s who were narrowly defeated in their play off finals. Both had excellent seasons finishing 2nd in their leagues the 3s had come 4th and challenged for promotion and the 5s as a new team had seen many new players introduced to senior hockey for the first time, had a lot of fun and built a good team spirit over the season. The 1s had finished in mid table in North 1 (our highest ever finish) and blooded several junior players who will be challenging for 1st team places again next year.
Both Paul and Anna thanked skippers and coaches for their efforts.
Pam summarised the junior sections year, with continued success of several of our talented juniors (boys and girls) who have gone on to representative levels across the age bands. Coaching had gone well and whilst the teams had not all qualified for the end of season play off finals, we had teams across all the age groups for boys and girls for the first time anyone could remember. Thanks to all the coaches and parents for their support and involvement, especially Simon Sutton, Katy Blyth, Rich Bingham, Ash Hardacre, Greg Hilton and Paul Lewis. Perhaps most pleasing was the return to the club of Simon Taylor (mark 2) who has picked up coaching the under 10s who have had great fun and look to make further progress next year.
The club can also announce that 3 new vice presidents were approved at the AGM, these being Karen Shackleton (Dave Akroyd’s better half who is a former Treasurer, player and committee member), Greg Hilton (ex chairman, pitch fund raiser, mens captain and now junior coach) and Simon Taylor (mark 1) (ex secretary for many years and junior coach and still running around in midfield for the 2s and the Vets).
Additionally, 3 new life members were appointed namely Ian Phillips (fixture secretary for decades and welsh over 70s Masters player), Bridget Petty (club member for over 30 years, Welfare officer, umpire, ex junior coach and proud parent of our first ever full England international when her daughter Suzy debuted earlier this year) and Tony Pickard who skippered the mens 1s back in the 1970s when hockey was played on grass and with roll ins from the sideline. Congratulations to all of them.
Most of the Executive Committee have kindly agreed to stay on in their roles (Mark, Anna, Paul, Rosh, Katy, Gaby) but the new committee members are Sam Jackson (replacing Jacs as Treasurer) and Jacs (replacing Sarah McCall as Comms coordinator). The best news is that Jane Holmes has taken over from Emily as Teas coordinator so we eagerly await Aunt Bessie Yorkshire pudds and roasties next season (for the home team as a minimum!), Simon Taylor1 has kindly agreed to be the auditor of the accounts and check Sam’s sums and Andy Boag has agreed to help Gaby with the social events.
New skippers are Edd Holford for the mens 2s, Tom Beale for the 3s, Jess Richardson along with Sandra Clarke for the ladies 2s and the ladies 5s role is still up for grabs. Richard Poll will organise the mens 5s and 6s off the pitch with on pitch duties being shared around the senior players. Thanks to those skippers stepping down and I hope the experience gained is still put to good use next season as you support the new leaders.
Summer league begins soon, the dinner is on 6th May when end of season awards are handed out, the YHA dinner eagerly awaited by the Mens 1s and 4s is on 12th May and the mens 4s head to Leicester on 20th May to see if they can follow on from the success of the ladies 1s last season and come back with the EH national award for team of the year. There is some serious competition in the category but the 4s have nothing to be afraid of after their unbeaten season!
Thanks to all members for making the club such an enjoyable place to play hockey in 2016/17 and lets continue to take the club forward next season both on and off the pitch.
