Adel 4s got the season off to a flyer with a convincing victory over rivals Ben Rhydding on the newly laid Adel pitch. In recent times the pitch had become a fortress for both Men’s and Women’s teams and the trend continued on a classic yorkshire Saturday morning.

The new Captain drafted in several of the offseason free transfers from Leeds Medics and Dentist’s Hockey Club and the gamble seemed to pay off with 2 scoring debut goals. Scouting reported the opposition to play a solid 4-2-3-1 formation with a high defensive line who like to play through the middle of the park. Their gameplan was soon destroyed by a Adel team filled with an array of attacking talents and a solid new central defensive partnership. The first half demonstrated why Adel 4s are favourites for promotion with several missed easy chances but also 2 goals from newbies Dave Stockell and James Florance. The only blip was the lapse in concentration allowing Ben Rhydding to score a joke of a goal. The final nail in the coffin of a very slow, creaky, ancient defence was delivered with a fantastic J run down the right from WB Finn Lees, dummies over by Rich Bingham to allow a simple tap-in for Midfield linchpin Ed Crocker. HT 3-1!

The second half was much of the same, basically attack vs defence. Unfortunately the halftime jelly babies, and captains chat were conteracted by lack of fitness and post-Fruity syndrome which made putting away chances a real issue with an open goal miss and several sitters botched up. However the win was sealed by a captain’s goal, winning the ball off a Ben Rhydding 16, a one-two with James Florance before slamming a powerful hit into the bottom left corner from the top of the D.

A great start to the season with a solid team performance with new partnerships forming all over he pitch. Special mentions to all debutants, Dave Stockell, James Florance and Andy Boag (all attackers) and a commanding display from Adam Lucas at the back.

MotM – Adam Lucas – defensively sound and brought the ball out of defence well

DotD – David Mattinson – shocking open goal miss to counter the beautifully taken goal and everybody who didn’t stay after the match

Anonymous observer praises Ed Crocker: “He had a very profound influence on the game. It’s never easy for a player with such high expectations on him to come in against a side like Ben Ryhdding and run the show

“For a debut it was top class. He brings know-how, experience and quality.”
